Medicine & Healthcare, Physiotherapy in Nepal by Anna Lena Sandersfeld
Anna from Germany spent three months working on a Physiotherapy placement in Nepal with Projects Abroad. Here she tells us about her time working at the Nutritional Rehabilitation Home in Kathmandu.
I started working at NRH (Nutritional Rehabilitation Home) in my 5th week in Nepal after Sajani, the Projects Abroad director in Nepal showed me this impressive project. The NRH is a home for malnourished children and their caretakers to stay at in order to improve their diet and get a good nutritional intake. The parents learn about growing vegetables next to the house and how to cook.
The nurses tell them about vitamins, minerals and hygiene and diseases. Some of the children are waiting for surgery and came to the NRH to get in a better physical condition before the operation.
My work was to treat those children who need physiotherapy. Most of my patients had meningitis, encephalitis or cerebral diseases. I tried to soothe the muscle tension and support them to stand, sit or walk. I treated the children and also got in touch with the parents to show them how to continue the child's treatment when they're going home. All the staff members are very open minded and Sunita the head of the home is open to new ideas and criticism. So it hasn't only been work - I wanted the parents to learn a bit about the diseases and support their children more.
I've been welcomed to the home like a family member and got used to the children, mothers, nurses and fill-in staff members very quickly. They let me know more about their culture, their life style and the circumstances of the hard life in and around Kathmandu.
I also got in touch with the healthy children. We prepared some toys and played around in the sun on the roof top. Me and the other volunteers painted the new building and it has been a lot of fun to spend more time on this project. I hope that all the kids and parents like our pictures and remember the day we did the painting.
My work has been a kind of social physiotherapy placement but this has been especially the fact why I love it that much. Who ever is going to work in Nepal should visit a lot of Sajani's project to find his favorite. And NRH is definitely one of the best. I had a great time!
