Medicine & Healthcare in Mexico by Nina Pauly

My work experience at Sanatorio Maternidad Rosette Guadalajara!

I came to Mexico not sure what to expect. I had already worked in a German hospital for some time but was not sure if this would be similar. Actually it is the total opposite. In Germany I learned the most about the job of a nurse, here I am being treated as if I was a qualified physician; they even call me Dr. Nina.

So far it has been just great, I have had the chance to attend to lots of different surgeries and even having the chance to participate actively in them. I get to look after the patients with the doctor and the nurses and watch their improvement. As the hospital offers all kinds of treatments I had the chance to get in touch with all kinds of areas of medicine from urology to plastic surgery or helping in obstetrics when the women are giving birth. I start working at 9am and usually what I do first is to take a look if there is any surgery going on, if there is, I go there and watch it. After that I have the chance to talk to the doctors and nurses or take care of the babies, washing them and feeding them.

Depending on how much there is to do; I may feed some other patients or go to the x-ray room and help doing radiographies. After that, I wait until the doctors come to visit the patients or join them in their consulting rooms. While the doctors make their visits I help them or they explain the illnesses to me so I learn how to understand the heartbeats strength or get to know if there is water in the patient’s stomach for example. If there is another surgery or anything else, I just stay longer if not I leave at 2 or 3 pm. Sometimes I give English classes so those days I stay for an extra hour.

If you are afraid of doing something wrong, just embrace all the chances you are given by the staff of this hospital and you will have an incomparable experience. At the end you will realise that all you know theoretically is transferred in everyday practice. I never imagined to take such a close look into my future job and I am loving it.

If you take as much as you can from this experience you will be rich in wisdom when you finish your time. Take it seriously and follow the tips that are given, I bet you will learn more than you ever imagined. Add to this all the fun with the Mexican people cause they are funny, caring and incredibly open and willing to share with your their culture and how their way of how work should be done.
